Dr. Leann Mclaren, PhD
Provost PostDoctoral Research Fellow | Political Scientist
Welcome! I am a recent PhD in Political Science from Duke University. My research interests are race, ethnicity, and politics, American politics, Black political behavior, and immigration. My work has been supported by the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF-GRFP), the American Political Science Association Minority Fellowship Program (APSA-MFP), and the Russell Sage Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Grant (RSF-DRG), among others. My research within these areas has been published in the American Political Science Review, The Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, and Politics, Groups, and Identities. I am currently a provost postdoctoral research fellow at Johns Hopkins University.
My academic career has been shaped by a deep interest in political science and a commitment to understanding and addressing issues of race and ethnicity in politics. My book project explores how Black candidates with 'invisible identities', specifically immigration status, strategize and are perceived in political campaigns. This work is part of my broader research in Black political behavior. Other projects include mapping Black political behavior in the realms of social movements and political participation. I received my B.A. from the University of Connecticut in political science and history, and M.A. in political science from Duke University.
